Our community service project this year is devoted to Philadelphia Futures. Philadelphia Futures is a nonprofit organization that provides promising, urban high school students with the tools they need to achieve their dream of a college education. The organization’s centerpiece program, Sponsor-A-Scholar (SAS), helps students from economically disadvantaged families to succeed in high school, and to pursue and complete higher education. SAS, has served over 1,000 economically disadvantaged students attending Philadelphia’s neighborhood high schools through a multi-pronged program of services which provides: (1) long-term, one-on-one mentoring; (2) year-round academic enrichment activities and college guidance; (3) $6,000 for college-related expenses; and (4) individualized staff support through high school and college – a minimum of eight years.
Because of Philadelphia Futures' "do whatever it takes" approach, SAS students achieve strong and consistent results. SAS students' four-year graduation rate from high school is 99%, compared to a six-year graduation rate from Philadelphia’s neighborhood public high schools of approximately 50%. All 47 members of the SAS Class of 2010 were accepted to college and will be attending a broad range of schools in the fall including Dickinson College, Gettysburg College, Drexel University, Penn State University, Temple University and the University of Pennsylvania.
They are "Making Stars of the Future"!!!
